Language Research Day

On Wednesday 22nd April, the first Language Research Day was held at the LSRI. The event was a great success. Attended by over 30 participants here at Nottingham, a further 15 participants on our campus in Ningbo China, and a number of on-line attendees both here and abroad, all of the groups carrying out language-related research were represented. The programme, which featured an introduction and research talk from each of the groups investigating language acquisition, processing and pedagogy here at the University of Nottingham and on our campus in Ningbo China, really served to highlight both the diversity and the interconnectedness of  the research being carried out in this field here at Nottingham. The day was rounded off with an entertaining and stimulating talk from Prof. Paul Meara of Swansea University on the use of computational simulations to explore questions in vocabulary acquisition and an equally entertaining and informative talk from Dr John Bradley, Principal Educational Psychologist and Head of Inclusion Services, Nottinghamshire County Council, on Q-Methodology, a methodology which combines qualitative and quantitative aspects. We received some really positive feedback about the event and are looking forward to more such events in the future:

“a great day, interesting talks from a wide variety of perspectives”
“It is a great platform to exchange and get the insightful ideas from various perspectives. I am looking forward to the Second Language Research Day!”
“The day was a great success, I thought. I really enjoyed the talks.”

An archive of slides and posters from the event can be found on the Research Day web site:  http://www.lsri.nottingham.ac.uk/lrg/LanguageResearchDay.html
