People

Matthew Inglis is a newly-appointed LSRI Research Fellow.

He writes: 'I come to Nottingham from down the M1 at the University of Warwick, where I recently completed my PhD. My research to date has focussed on the reasoning and argumentation behaviour of mathematicians at the undergraduate and research level. Whilst at Nottingham I intend to continue this work, focussing in particular on the ways in which expert and novice mathematicians construct non-deductive arguments, and the aspects to which they attend when reading mathematical proofs. I have also dabbled in visual search research, and am currently involved in a project which seeks to study the influence of reasoning biases on search behaviour.'

Congratulations to Tim Jay, who as well as being very close to PhD completion, has been successful in gaining an appointment as a Research Officer on the Cityware project (www.cityware.org.uk) with Danae Stanton-Fraser and Eamonn O'Neill at the University of Bath. Tim says ‘It's going to be an exciting move for me, and I will maintain links with the LSRI, particularly in Mathematical Thinking’ with Camilla Gilmore and Matthew Inglis.

Events

LSRI Research Day 2 will be held on 6 March. Its purpose is to map the research interests of all LSRI’s people, and plan directions for future research.

Recent Presentations

Mike Sharples, Peggy Shao and Giulia Gelmini Hornsby attended the Kaleidoscope CSCL Alpine Rendezvous Workshop in January.

Mike led a Future Technology Workshop with Giasemi Vavoula that explored the future of mobile collaborative media creation.

Peggy presented a paper on ‘Motivating learning through the community of Mobile Blog’, while Giulia presented her work on interactive tabletop displays to support collaborative learning in 'The classroom of the future'. This workshop brought together researchers, teachers, designers and architects to share ideas on emerging theoretical and technological developments related to the future classroom and to plan in an innovative and engaging way.
